Content Warn: Discussion on the effects of dieting and restricting
Being a senior in the field of nutritional sciences, simply declaring my degree usually prompts someone making a comment concerning their eating habits, whether they defensive or interested. It’s rare for me to be bothered about these interactions, as food is something that is deeply personal, as people’s food choices are influenced by a variety of variables. There is however an issue that is brought up in such a frequent manner that it’s important to state my point clear. There’s no reason to attempt the keto diet.
For those who aren’t specialized on nutrition, think that anyone will disagree with my assertion that protein is the most coveted nutritional child. When compared to its macronutrient cousins (carbs as well as fat) Protein can basically make a difference. But, fat and carbs are more complicated in their public image. The food industry specifically vilifying carbs for a long time. That’s why diets that are protein-centric and low in carbs such as the paleo or keto diet could not immediately raise alarms for people. In the end, if carbohydrates are not good, protein is healthy and fat falls at the middle, the keto diet and paleo diet seem to be the best option isn’t it?
Medically prescribed and monitored by physicians.
Additionally The keto diet can trigger an altered metabolic condition which the body doesn’t want to live in. Prior to the concept of diet ketosis (for instance, to put yourself into a state of controlled ketosis by using the keto diet) and starvation ketosis (as experienced by malnourished people or people with specific metabolic conditions) was the primary kind of ketosis being studied in the field of nutrition.
Starvation ketosis refers to the metabolic change your body undergoes to switch from glucose being its main source of energy, and converting to ketone bodies to protect the body from death. The body’s purpose is to operate on glucose. This is the primary way to fuel your brain as well as your the red blood cells. The body usually uses amino acids (protein) to create energy following which it will then break down muscle tissue to obtain the substances it requires. Contrary to ketosis caused by starvation The keto diet consists of taking “just sufficient” food protein to avoid an endogenous breakdown of protein (marked muscles loss) and carbs to ensure that your red blood cells are active however insufficient to stop the transition of the body from glucose to use ketone.
My concern is what’s the likelihood of this happening to an individual who’s not closely monitored by a doctor? When you live a day-to-day life what is the best way to strike the perfect balance between eating and ketosis in the limit of about a couple of grams of carbohydrates and fat?
Furthermore, this raises the fact that keto isn’t as much a protein-based diet, but rather one that is primarily a fat-based diet. People who are following this diet need to try to get around 90% of their energy source to be from fat. Although losing weight by eating bacon and coconut oil might appear like a decent task, it’s actually cause for concern for cardiologists. Limiting vegetables due to the high amount of carbohydrates put people on the diet at risk of developing constipation due to the lack of fiber. It is possible to experience the “keto flu” or any combination of brain fog, nausea and constipation after a couple of days into the strict diet.

In a world which equates health and weight and health, it is difficult to explain to those around you that losing 5 pounds for possible nausea, lethargy constipation, and an increased chance of developing scurvy really taking charge of your health. After four years of training from professionals with RDs as well as PhDs and years working in the field, not one has spoken about the keto diet for no other reason in order to make us aware of the prevalence of its use and acknowledge the fact that it’s an area of study that we’re waiting for a response on. If I criticize of the keto diet, I’m usually received with an anecdotal response of how it has worked “so very well” for somebody else or some story of the way they’ve seen their “aunt shed twenty pounds.” Although I do not intend to deny individuals’ personal experiences since every individual is different however, there’s not enough data to conclude that keto’s better-studied results in the short-term translate into the long-term effects. It isn’t enough evidence that suggests the weight loss stays off or you will be healthier when you follow the keto diet in comparison to other interventions in the diet. If you’re a person who’s disillusioned about eating regimens, there’s no thing that is “magical” with the ketogenic diet for the reasons that the well-balanced diet with a low amount of processed foods would not be able to achieve. For me, it is the latest savage diet option for people who believe that restricting food intake is a sign of weakness or those seeking the magic “hack” that the experts don’t tell us. There is studies looking at its benefits to people suffering from diabetes, epilepsy and various other illnesses. As a general rule, attempt it in your home? Pass.
